Sunday 6th March – Stand with Ukraine Protest
Coronavirus Lockdown Day 714
Bronwen and I drove into the city, almost immediately found free parking, and walked to King George Square where we watched the “Stand with Ukraine” protest. Interestingly, most people there seemed to be actual Ukrainians, Russians, Polish, etc. (and speaking Ukrainian/Polish/Russian—I’m no expert, but it certainly wasn’t English) rather than Australian sympathisers to their cause, of which there seemed to be very few. The usual suspects (Socialist Alliance, where are you?) who always attend these kinds of protests were noticeably missing, and in contrast to most other rallies of this kind, rather than going on a march with a finite and obvious end point, it sort of just slowly petered out—people began to leave halfway through, and by the end there weren’t that many left.
